By now I'm sure you've all seen Kanye's show-stopping acceptance speech interruption at the MTV VMAs Sunday night. I don't have the video for it, as it seems MTV doesn't want it's precious award show up on youtube, but here's a quick rundown in case you missed it.
...the scene opens with young country star Taylor Swift about to launch into another one of those standard award acceptance speeches, when seemingly out of nowhere (was there a trapdoor underneath the stage or something?) appears Mr. Kanye West. Kanye steals the mic away from the petrified Miss Swift, who quickly apologizes for the interruption and says that he will only be one sec. Then he declares before the whole audience, nay, THE WHOLE WORLD, that Beyonce, who had just lost to Miss Swift, had made, "one of the best videos of all time." Cameras pan to Beyonce, who flashes one of those incredulous, "I know what you're thinking but I swear this wasn't my idea," smiles, and then the camera pans to Miss Swift, who looks like she just realized that a scorpion had crawled up into her cowboy boots. Kanye West then makes his pronunciation one more time, in case we somehow misunderstood, hands the mic back to Miss Swift, then gives an emphatic "I'm just sayin" shoulder shrug to the audience (see above), before disappearing as quickly as he appeared...
So far the response has been swift and decisive against Mr. West. The boos that rained down that night have been followed by celebrity "tweets" calling out the brash hip hop star. Some even suggested that he ruined the night, and sullied the good name of the MTV VMAs! Kanye immediately chose to go into damage control-mode, by going on the Leno show (Jay's back everyone!), to issue a tear-jerking apology to Swift and her fans, suggesting that maybe it's time for him to take some time off.
Was Mr. West right to apologize? Yes, definitely to Miss Swift, but not for disagreeing with who won. He should really be apologizing for feeling it necessary to get so bent out of shape over who won the "Female Artist of the Year" award at the MTV Video Music Awards. There's several problems there. a) Do people still watch music videos? I haven't seen a music video on MTV since the Clinton Administration. b) it's for the category of "Female Artist of the Year", which according to wikipedia, has been won by such musical luminaries as Paula Abdul, Eve, and Fergie...FERGIE! c) The MTV VMAs! In the wide universe of pointless awards, an MTV VMA is slightly more significant than an ESPY, but perhaps not as important as winning a Teen Choice Award.
What's my point? It's my belief that Mr. West needs to aim higher. Therefore, rather than taking time off from the spotlight, Kanye needs to dive right in and start attending every major award show, and be given full authority to interrupt each and every award speech if he feels that some injustice has been done. I'm talking all the big ones: The Emmys, The Golden Globe Awards, The Oscars...hell, even The Heisman Trophy presentation! Just imagine the intrigue this would add to the experience of watching the award shows, which have become stale and boring after all the years. Commentators would talk all week about who they think Kanye could interrupt, and nominees would wait all night in nervous anticipation, wondering if Kanye might jump out without warning and interrupt their acceptance speech. This is definitely something I could get on board with!
What would be the ultimate award show for Kanye to interrupt you ask? That's easy. It's one that's been going on for over a century, and is respected world-wide...The Nobel Prize. Just imagine, all the great minds and courageous heros from throughout the world are gathered in Stockholm, and the Nobel Prize for Physics has just been awarded to some German guy. The elated German professor begins his acceptance speech, and then BOOM, there's Kanye West, who snatches his mic, and goes, "Yo, Professor Heimerschmidt, I'm really happy for you, I'm going to let you finish, but uhh, Professor Chandrasekar had one of the best theories on quantum quark dynamics of all time! OF ALL TIME!"
Come on Kanye, let's make this happen!
